Montsonís Castle Project

Through the ‘Montsonís Castle’ project, we aim to invite people to explore our culture and history through sustainable experiences in a historic place, preserved in its essence from the 11th century.

Although many modifications have been made over the years, the current owners have been restoring its original appearance, and, as a good fortress, it has very characteristic elements.

On the main facade of the castle, two square towers are visible, and it has three entrance gates. The central one is the main entrance, with a segmental arched lintel, featuring heraldic shields on the lintels. Higher up, you can see a gabled mullioned window, arrow slits, and some large Renaissance windows. The upper part of the castle resembles the illustrations from a fairy tale, with large battlements and a keep tower that had to be rebuilt after the revolt of the remensas in 1460. It still flies the flag because the castle is inhabited. Right next to it, there is a Baroque church, dedicated to Sant Urbà, which connects to the castle itself.

Inside, you can find various rooms, such as the room of the shields, a private oratory, and the pilgrim’s room. Additionally, you can visit the prison, which still preserves the chains and furniture from the era. In the cellar, a secret passage leading to the Monastery of Salgar was discovered during the Spanish Civil War. It had been sealed off for 130 years due to the phylloxera plague that affected the vineyards in the area.

Currently, it is also the headquarters of the Castells Culturals de Catalunya Foundation, which promotes activities in these ancient fortresses. The monument offers virtual tours of the complex, guided tours, and theatrical performances to bring the castle closer to visitors. Likewise, the Montsonís Shop offers tastings, fork breakfasts, dinners… as well as a wide variety of local products.
